Recovery Lingo

Terms and sayings that float around and their meanings. Plus, my interpretations of them.

Terms

Active Alcholic

When someone continues to drink alcohol despite negative consequences.

Friend of Bill

This is our secret code to signify that we are alcoholics in recovery – kinda like a nod. We use it in public places to retain our anonymity and welcome fellow Friends of Bill to talk with us.

Sayings

Think. Think. Think.

A reminder to stop over-thinking and to think before we drink or speak.

One Day at a Time (ODAAT)

Stay in today, focus your attention on what’s happening at the moment instead of worrying about what’s to come.

My Papa always says “If you got one foot in tomorrow and one foot in yesterday, your pissin’ on today!”

Faith Without Works Is Dead.

We can’t sleep our way to recovery, it takes practice and consistent effort. You can hope and pray all day but until you begin putting in the work towards recovery, you’ll remain exactly as you are.

(probably in some degree of pain or discontentment)
